I am seriously excited about this next knitwear designer I’m about to tell you about. I discovered him through Iqons.com and my gosh…he has stayed under the radar! His pieces are absolutely amazing. And to top it all off, he’s justtaken the offer to do the Fashion Masters Degree at Central Saint Martins!

Johan Ku was born in Taipei, Taiwan 1979 and hasn’t exactly had the straight path towards knitwear design. He was originally going to go into graphic design, graduating from advertising design at Sung Shan High School of Commerce. He however took a different path into Textile and Fashion design at Shu-Te University where he completed his BA. He then completed his MA in 2005 at Fu-Jen University.

The collection featured in this post is titled “Emotional Sculpture”. Johan has experimented with breaking the limitation of Gauge in his pieces. It features knitting as well as crochet to create 3d sculptured dresses.
Johan founded his own studio in 2005, showing in Hong Kong Fashion Week twice in 2007. His signature is sculpture-like dresses in white wool, think exaggerated Sandra Backlund.
His other collections have won several awards starting with his “Dolores” series, quite rightly winning the first prize when he graduated from Shu-Te University. In 2004 the “Neo-Cheongsam Look”series won the first prize of The China International Collegiate Fashion Design Competition. In 2005 “Re-sculpture” won the first prize of ” Donghua Cup, International Design Contest. There are also many other awards which will fill up this whole post if I mention them all!

Please look at his other collections at http://www.johanku.com. All photos were taken from his website.
